On December 4th, 2003 the Post Office celebrated 120 years of service in Austin.
Here are three pictures showing the buildings that have been used in the past as the post office.
Here are a few old pics from around Austin. The top left picture is the main street looking East. The third building from the end is where the fire hall is now. That building was called the People's Store and was owned by Sir Walter Clifford. Top middle is the People's Store from the East. Clifford came from Devon, England in 1883. He traveled across Canada and settled in Austin. He had a dairy farm where Andy Giesbrecht lives now. Top right is a picture of the old barn. It was made of cement fashioned to look like stones. The Thompson family made the blocks at a site near the old nuisance grounds. Bottom left is a mill that Clifford owned. It was situated just West of the Memory Lane service station. At one time there was a CPR rail spur line to the mill. Bottom middle is a 2003 photo of the Clifford ancestral home in Devon and bottom right is a picture of Sir Clifford standing in front of his home in Austin. It was a large two story blue house which stood at 120 Manitoba Ave. More of these old photos can be seen at Memory Lane Cafe.
